These files are sources and documentation of the PPP,  SLIP and PLIP drivers.

  • PPP 1.5.3: PPP package for communications via serial line, sources (Minix 2.0.2 to 2.0.4).[Details]
  • SLIP 1.5.1: SLIP package for communications via serial line, sources (Minix 2.0.2 to 2.0.4).
  • PLIP 0.5.3: PLIP package for communications via parallel port between 2 machines. It is beta code, be very careful with your installation. Sources and documentation (Minix 2.0.2 and 2.0.4).[Details]

These documentation may help you configuring PPP/SLIP/PLIP and routing in Minix. I recommend you to read all the documentation before starting any work in your system.

  • Routing example: this paper comments how to interconnect and configure 3 machines with Minix via PPP/SLIP/PLIP.
  • Routing Tips: this e-mail comments some interesting tips for configuring routing in Minix.
  • Link configuration: this paper comments how to link Minix with other Minix or Linux via PPP
  • BSD Compress Tests: this document present some tests I did with BSD Compress under Minix.

Driver's Status

Current version of drivers are 1.5.3 for PPP and 1.5.1 for SLIP. Both drivers works in Minix version 2.0.2, 2.0.3 and 2.0.4, in 16 and 32 bits. Also it works under Minix-VMD version 1.7.0 being a client and server.

PLIP driver is version 0.5.3, it is stable but is not a final version. ONLY for standard Minix 2.0.2 and over (16 and 32 bits).

PPP version 1.5.3 includes VH header compression, protocol and address compression, CCP protocol (Compression Control Protocol) and BSD compression, CHAP and PAP authentication, IP address negotiation, DNS and default route support. BSD Compression works only in 32 bits. The compression is variable, very dependent of the information transmited in the link. I did various tests to know how compression works. Under 16 bits, compilations automatically disable the CCP compression code. The package compiles 2 driver versions, one for client connection (ppp.drv) and a second for server connections (ppp.srv). A man page is supplied for quick reference. You can check the HISTORY.ppp file into the PPP package for details in development and bug fixes.

SLIP is currently in hold. No problems were reported and I will not add new features. This is a separate package. PPP package does not include any SLIP version.

If you have suggestions for adding more features to the code, please send me an e-mail.
