Edward Van Halen
Edward Van Halen not only had a huge influence on the guitarists of the 1980s, but he also had a huge influence on the guitar market. He is the one who popularized the "super strat." A "super strat" is a guitar that looks similar to a Fender Stratocaster, but instead has a "humbucker pickup" (like those found on Gibson Les Pauls) for a hotter sound and Floyd Rose Tremolos. Edward started out by making his own guitars. These were his "Frankenstrats" and were the same guitar, with different necks and paint jobs throughout his early career. However, in around 1983, Edward got an endorsement from Kramer Guitars and they made him his custom "5150" guitar (shown at right.) This would continue to be his signature guitar throughout the 1980s and its also had many different guitar designs based off of it.
